Coca-Cola’s Secret Recipe Revealed For The First Time In 125 Years

But now, the producers of the weekly hour-long radio program,This American Life, claim to have spotted the secret recipe on page 2B of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (daily), dated February 18, 1979.
The page shows a hand-written copy of John Pemberton’s original coke recipe (far below), now safe in a bank vault.
Invented by Pemberton in 19th century, the recipe - – which was intended to be a medicine for morphine addiction, headache, and impotence among other diseases – - was bought out by businessman Asa Griggs Candler, who went on to burn the earliest records of the company, prohibited the recipe from being written down, and saw that only two people would know the secret ingredients and how to mix the 7X flavor.
Even the invoices of ingredient purchases are maintained secretly. So, here goes the stuff you’ve been waiting for…

The recipe:
Fluid extract of Coca: 3 drams USP
Citric acid: 3 oz
Caffeine: 1 oz
Sugar: 30 (unclear quantity)
Water: 2.5 gal
Lime juice: 2 pints, 1 quart
Vanilla: 1 oz
Caramel: 1.5 oz or more for color
…
The secret 7X flavor (use 2 oz of flavor to 5 gals syrup): Alcohol: 8 oz
Orange oil: 20 drops
Lemon oil: 30 drops
Nutmeg oil: 10 drops
Coriander: 5 drops
Neroli: 10 drops
Cinnamon: 10 drops

And now, can anyone go prepare it? Apparently, NOT! Coca-Cola uses a cocaine-free coca leaf extract prepared at a Stepan Company in New Jersey, the only company that is authorized to do so (or rather, can do so).

Dynamic Range Day 2011 Fighting the loudness war

Public awareness of the so-called ‘loudness war’ has been increasing of late, thanks to exposure in non-specialist publications (The Guardian and The Wall Street Journal have both featured articles about it), and also because of initiatives like Dynamic Range Day.

Described as a “day of online activity to make people more aware of the loudness war”, Dynamic Range Day makes use of social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook to try to educate both music-industry professionals and the record-buying public about the deleterious effects of excessive dynamic-range reduction (which is not an easy thing to do, as any studio geek who’s tried to explain compression to a less technically-inclined friend will know!).
To this end, the organisers of Dynamic Range Day 2011 have organised a competition, wherein entrants have to listen to three different masters of the same mix, and identify the version that has the greatest dynamic range. There are eight prizes to be won, including an SSL X-Desk, a pair of B&W CM1 loudspeakers, and a Shure mobile recording kit, including PG42 and PG27 mics.
There will also be an award for the best-sounding dynamic mix of 2010-11. The winner will be chosen by a panel of industry experts, and you can nominate a mix you think worthy of the award via the Dynamic Range Day web site.
This year, Dynamic Range Day will be held on March 25th. For more information, check out the web site, below.

API Channel Strip and new Lunchbox rack unveiled Preamp, EQ and compressor in 1U

API have announced a new channel strip, called — logically enough — the API Channel Strip. A 1U rack, its signal-conditioning and processing facilities are divided into four sections: a mic preamp, an EQ, a compressor and a line driver.
The preamp is identical to that of API’s own 512C Lunchbox module, and this provides up to 65dB of gain, as well as phantom power, a -20dB pad, a polarity invert switch and a mic/instrument input selector (for use with the high-impedance jack input socket).

Next we have the compressor, which is based on another Lunchbox module: the 527. As well as the usual attack, release, threshold and ratio controls, this features soft/hard-knee switching, a Link button (for chaining two units and compressing stereo sources), a feed-back/feed-forward switch (for selecting between two different compressor topologies), and a pre/post-EQ switch, which determines the order of signal processing. There’s also a button labelled Thrust, which engages a high-pass filter in the control-voltage signal to help prevent loud, low-frequency sounds triggering the compressor. A 10-LED meter shows the amount of gain reduction being applied.
To the right of the compressor is the EQ section, identical to the 550A module. This offers independent control over three bands, each of which has a ±12dB range, and a choice of seven different frequencies. The high and low bands can be switched between peaking and shelving filter types, while a button labelled BP Filter engages a band-pass filter, which rejects frequencies below 50Hz and above 15kHz.
Finally, the line-driver section offers an output level control, and features a VU meter, which can be set to display either the line-driver’s output, or the output level immediately after the mic preamp.
The Channel Strip’s rear panel hosts a multitude of sockets, including both mic and line inputs, and an XLR line-level output. In addition to these are a number of jack sockets, which allow you to patch into and out of the Channel Strip at various points in its signal path. A Pre Out jack socket and lets you take a clean, unprocessed signal immediately after the preamp stage. There are also two insert points, both have which have separate, balanced jack sockets for sends and returns. A side-chain input for the compressor, and a Link socket for chaining two Channel Strips together, conclude the array of socketry.

The API Channel Strip is selling now, for £2400 including VAT.
In other API news, the company have recently revised the technical specifications of their very popular six-module Lunchbox rack. The 500 6B, as the revised rack is known, has a more powerful power-supply unit than the previous version, and can now supply 215mA per slot, allowing you to fill the rack with high-current-demand units without running the risk of some modules being undersupplied.
The power rails for each slot now also have their own individual, user-replaceable fuses, which eliminates the risk of one defective module damaging others in the rack. Additionally, the front panel of the new Lunchbox rack features LED indicators for each of the three supply voltages (+16V, -16V and +48V), so you can tell at a glance whether the PSU is behaving itself.
Finally, the 500 6B’s rear panel features two D-sub connectors for the eight inputs and outputs, in addition to the usual XLR sockets, should you want to connect all eight outputs to a recorder (for example). Two extra pairs of XLR sockets give you access to inputs and outputs 7 and 8, even when using the D-sub connectors.
Also available now, the API Lunchbox 500 6B carries the same price as its predecessor: just £420, including VAT.

Drawmer release 4X4R Four-way mic splitter

Press Release: Respected UK audio processor manufacturer Drawmer have announced the introduction of the new 4x4R 1U Active Splitter. Aimed at any situation that requires audio signals to be split and fed to multiple destinations, the rackmountable 1U 4x4R has four inputs and 16 balanced outputs, with a transparent mic preamp on each input offering up to 66dB of gain. The 4x4R’s I/O may be flexibly configured in a variety of ways, ranging from a single input routed to all 16 outputs to four different inputs, each with four outputs — and any configuration in between, such as two different inputs, each routed to eight outputs. In addition to the comprehensive input/output linking, the 4x4R features bargraph metering and switchable phantom power on every input channel, and a front-panel headphone jack provides a ‘listen’ facility to monitor any of the four inputs. The option of transformer isolation is available for some or all of the outputs.

Whilst the existing 4x4 Portable Kickbox continues to fulfil requirements for press conference and outside broadcast applications, the new 4x4R rackmount Active Splitter now perfectly addresses the larger market area of rental, touring, live sound and fixed installations in venues and theatres. Ken Giles, Sales Director at Drawmer, comments, "The new 4x4R is a very flexible and cost-effective tool; multiple units can be configured and racked to provide precisely the number of channels needed for each job, and you can tailor the number of transformer-isolated outputs to suit the exact application.”
The 4x4R is shipping now. For more information, see the Drawmer web site.

HOW TO: Find Email Sender’s Details, Location

There are times when someone contacts you by email, someone who you didn’t know, but want to find out where he’s from or his full profile on the web (nothing escapes the web, does it?). Here go some tips to help you do just that… [SOURCE]

Open the header of the email message - – In Microsoft Outlook: right-click on the message in the message list > Message Options > Internet Headers (bottom) or Gmail: Open message > click on "Reply" drop-down link on top far right > Show original – - and look for lines that say “Received: from” followed by an IP address in square brackets. If there are multiple entries, use the IP address mentioned in the last entry.

Then insert the IP address in the trace route tool [go here], which should retrieve the closest possible location of the sender. That’s it.

HOW TO: Rip / Download Music and Radio Online

What in your view are the best sources of free music? Here are mine – - Last.fm, Yahoo! Music, iTunes Radio, Pandora, and of course, YouTube and Google Videos. Now, lets see how to rip ‘em up and save to our hard drive…
AUDACITY is a free cross-platform (Windows / Mac OS X / Linux / Unix) sound editor that will help us here (download).
First, run Audacity and go to Float Mixer Toolbar (drop-down) > select "Wave Out" or "Stereo Mix" for input source. Then open an online radio station or music website, go back to Audacity and hit the "Record" button (.) Stop recording (hit space bar) at will. Now go to File > Export Multiple and export the recording in .mp3 file format. That’s it! This works for any website, including YouTube.
FREECORDER (download) is another such tool that allows recording MP3 audio from any website that plays music. Furthermore, it’s allows downloading video hosted on 1000s of other sites (incl. YouTube, Google Video etc), has a built-in flv player, and file converter.
