Sound Radix' SurferEQ - Pitch Tracking Equalizer

Sound Radix has released the SurferEQ, a new equalizer that automatically tracks the pitch of the signal and adjusts the eq frequencies accordingly. If this works as described it will make it much easier to do corrective and surgical enhancement of sounds. A standard equalizer can currently do this only by manually selecting the frequencies and automating the eq changes that's needed. I can see using this extensively on vocals.

From the website:

SurferEQ tracks the pitch of the instrument or a vocal track and can change the EQ frequency accordingly in real-time, making it possible for the first time to naturally control the fundamental frequencies or harmonics of a track. Just set any of the EQ bands to a desired harmonic and watch SurferEQ move with the track, staying always relevant to the music.
For over a year, we've meticulously developed an accurate, real-time pitch detection engine with virtually no octave errors. There's no need for endless parameters tweaking. It just works.
When developing our original analog-behaving asymmetric EQ algorithms (No cookbook EQ here!), we've made every effort to preserve the size and energy of the original recording. SurferEQ sounds natural even when it is pushed to its extremes. In addition to the HP, LP, shelf and bell shaped filters, we've developed a unique four mode harmonic filter. It takes on a whole new life when it moves with the pitch and makes it possible to achieve new sounds as never heard before.

Features

  • Pitch-Tracking Equalizer
  • Original Assymetric EQ Algorithms
  • Innovative Harmonic Filter
  • 64 Bit Internal Processing
Here's an introductory video of the SurferEQ:

Introductory price is $129. Download a demo (RTAS/VST/AU) here.

Sting to Release Album as iPad App

Sting is releasing his new album as an iPad app. The app itself is free and will give access to footage and music spanning his 25 year career (the songs are purchased on iTunes). I would also do an iPhone and Android app. Many music lovers listen to their favorite artists on their smartphones. Have you seen some of  the latest Verizon commercials?

From Mashable's website:
"Bassist and singer-songwriter Sting might be onto something with his latest album, which will be released not as digital files, but as a complete iPad app. The singer's new Sting 25 app celebrating his storied 25-year career will be a comprehensive package of photos, lyrics, interviews and concert footage, and of course, the music itself. This is Sting's idea of what comes next after the CD, and he says "I'm looking for different ways get music to people … and the app is the new model." And, iPad apps are harder to steal. Could this be a trend?..."

From the iTunes  page:
"Sting 25 explores the life, music and activism of one of the world’s most influential musicians. With unparalleled access to seminal performances, rare photos, and personal stories, this comprehensive appumentary depicts the past 25 years of Sting’s career as a renowned musician and humanitarian.

Discover the evolution of Sting’s solo career, the influences that have shaped his music, and his ongoing efforts as a global citizen and activist. The many facets of his career come to life in this appumentary through handwritten lyrics and journal entries, rare and intimate photos, in-depth interviews, and a variety of live concert footage, including EXCLUSIVE, all-star performances from his Sixtieth Birthday Celebration at the Beacon Theatre.

• Exclusive concert footage and behind-the-scenes access from Sting’s Sixtieth Birthday Celebration to benefit the Robin Hood Foundation, at New York City’s Beacon Theatre, featuring performances by: Bruce Springsteen, Lady Gaga, Stevie Wonder, Rufus Wainwright, Herbie Hancock, and Branford Marsalis.

• Using dual-screen AirPlay, experience these performances wirelessly on your television while exploring additional content on your iPad.

• Discover hours of concert footage, exclusive interviews, photos, music videos, and more in ten chronological chapters.

• Learn about the inspirations, collaborations, and charitable endeavors that have shaped Sting’s 25 year solo career.

• Interact with Sting’s signature instruments through 360˚ views and high definition zoom images.

• Listen to Sting’s albums from your iPad's library while browsing the app – you can also sample songs from each of his solo albums and purchase directly from the iTunes Store.

Amy Winehouse - Our Day Will Come: Amy Winehouse Tribute

This is the official video released by Island/Universal Records of Amy's "Our Day Will Come" produced by Salaam Remi. The video is comprised of footage showing Amy at different points in her life and career. The song was originally done for her first album "Frank" but was never used. Salaam decided to do additional production with a nice reggae/rocksteady twist and this is the outcome.
I mixed the song at Metropolis Studios in London and when it was played for her family, manager and label president, everyone agreed the song had to be included on "Lioness: Hidden Treasures".
The song was originally sung by Ruby and The Romantics (a #1 hit in 1963) and was written by Bob Hilliard and Mort Garson.

Amy Winehouse - Lioness: Hidden Treasures debuts on Dec 5 and can be pre-ordered on iTunes

Proceeds from the album goes towards the Amy Winehouse Foundation (AWF) which was set up in Amy's memory to help young people in need.

Amy Winehouse Finished Writing Songs for Third LP, Planned Jazz Album With ?uestlove

Billboard has posted an article which speaks on the fact that Amy had plans to do an alternative album but sadly passed away before the album became a reality. While working on the current album Salaam and I spoke about the project and the song "Halftime" featuring Amy on vocals and guitar, Salaam on bass, ?uestlove on drums and James Poyser on keys gives you an idea of what the project might have sounded like.

Here are some excerpts from the article:
"Amy Winehouse had written all the songs that were to appear on her third album. She even picked out song titles."

"Music producer Salaam Remi said the soul singer, who died over the summer, was not rushing to release that new material, instead planning to drop a jazz album first with a "supergroup" including ?uestlove of the Roots. ?uestlove did make the new album, though. He appears on the track "Half Time."" (one of my favorites on the album. I really enjoyed mixing the song. Salaam, ?uestlove and James Poyser did impeccable work on it.)
Remi, who worked on the singer's two albums, "Frank" and "Back to Black," produced most of the upcoming CD, saying Winehouse was a perfectionist when it came to composing music.
"She was taking her time with it, and at the end of the day all of her songs are somewhat autobiographical, so she had to live through something, then get out of it and then look back at it to be able to write about it," he said.

"Remi has produced for the Fuguees, Nas, Jazmine Sullivan and Nelly Furtado. He produced the song "Block Party" from TLC member Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, and Winehouse sought him out after hearing the track. Remi says that Winehouse usually wrote songs while playing the guitar and that the new album sounds just as good as her critically acclaimed predecessors."
