Report: Japan Apple Store offers power, support, shelter

As the tragedy and aftershocks of the Japanese earthquake still unfold, one Apple Store employee offers an account of how Apple is doing its part to help.
On his personal blog, Web investor Kevin Rose posted an e-mail he received from a friend who works at an Apple Store in Japan. Rose’s friend, who wished to remain anonymous, explained how the store has been offering power strips and device charging cables to anyone who needed them. The store has stayed open late into the night teaching people how to check news on their devices or use the store’s free Wi-Fi to e-mail and FaceTime with loved ones.
Apple told both its retail and corporate staff that they could sleep at Apple stores. After the initial earthquake hit on Friday, senior managers ran out to stock up on food and drinks to prepare their stores as emergency shelters. Employees have been able to stay overnight in the store and even bring family, with one business team member’s mother walking 3.5 hours to get there. When she arrived, store staff greeted her with the kind of standing ovation that Apple Stores use for big product launches.
Apple corporate employees also told retail staff that, should they want to attempt to go home, Apple would cover the costs of food and transportation. Should employees find that they couldn’t make it home, Apple would also pay for a hotel.
Of course, stories of businesses pitching in during times of crisis are nothing new. Sony, for example, announced that it has donated 300 million Japanese yen, set up a disaster relief fund that employees can donate into, and donated 30,000 radios for relief efforts. But anecdotes like this, from citizens on the ground, offer a sliver of a silver lining to what is an increasingly dark cloud.

Murdered Singer Sam Cooke One Step Closer To Getting Biopic

For a long time, Sam Cooke was a brilliant businessman and a beautiful voice. He recorded numerous top ten songs, started his own record label and was fast on his way to becoming a reasonably important cultural icon. Then he heard Bob Dylan’s “Blowin’ In The Wind” and suddenly all of his success wasn’t enough. He couldn’t remain quiet about the trumped up arrests and the stifling inequality. If Bob Dylan could comment on the Civil Rights Struggle, so could he. The result was one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever recorded. Honest and haunting, “A Change Is Gonna Come” was voted as the twelfth greatest song of all-time by Rolling Stone, and it ultimately became the piece of music we most closely relate to the fight against inequality. Unfortunately, Cooke didn’t live to see it released. He was robbed of both his clothing and wallet by a prostitute. He ran to a hotel manager for help, who, fearful of a screaming naked black man, shot and severely beat him with a broomstick until he died. Chargers were never filed against her.

A few years back, Peter Guralnick published what many consider to be the formative biography on the singer Dream Boogie: The Triumph Of Sam Cooke. Dick Clement and Ian Le Frenais have since adapted it into a screenplay, and now, according to THR, ABKCO, the holder of most of Cooke’s master recordings, is actively looking to make the biopic happen. No director or stars have been signed, but the script does cover the musician’s entire life. Expect the result to be happy, sad, joyful and triumphant.

I’ve gone ahead and embedded Sam Cooke’s “A Change Is Gonna Come” below. If you’re not at work, take a listen. It’s still just as beautiful nearly fifty years later…

Google to refresh Blogger by Brennon Slattery

In Google’s promotional video showcasing the improvements headed to Blogger over the course of 2011, the company asks: “Have You Looked at Blogger Lately?” Chances are the answer is “no.”
Even though Blogger is one of the top 10 most-visited Web sites—leagues ahead of competitors WordPress, Tumblr, and the like—the Blogger interface has been mostly static over the platform’s 11-year history. The most significant update came last year when Google unveiled the Blogger Template Designer, but since then, the service has been quiet.
Meanwhile, competing blogging platforms have matured with slick interfaces and intuitive mobile apps. Tumblr has made notable headway in this direction—the Tumblr iOS appis streamlined in such a way to allow for specific types of posts, such as photos, quotes, and links; and has a built-in content discovery system that makes Tumblr more of a social network than a blogging tool. It’s precisely this kind of eye candy and ease-of-use that Google hopes to emulate with its forthcoming updates.
The new Blogger—which the company says will be updated “throughout 2011”— uses the Google Web Toolkit, a development toolkit for building and optimizing complex browser-based applications. It also sports a modern publishing dashboard and a more customizable template designer.
What’s exciting for the socially networked is Google’s new content discovery feature. Depending on the blog you’re currently reading, Blogger finds topic keywords and feature them in a drop-down menu, allowing users to quickly hop between (or stumble upon, if you will) different Web sites posting similar material.
With 400 million active readers and approximately 5000 novels worth of new words per day, Blogger’s update ought to reach a lot of readers and writers.

MySpace Still Pushing for Big Brand Ad Dollars Site is pressing ahead with a suite of innovative ad placements

Despite actively searching for a buyer, MySpace has a message for the online ad market: It's still open for business.

“We still have a sizable audience that is enormously valuable in the market [where] we still reach 40 million unique users—especially for anyone who wants to reach Generation Y with content,” said MySpace’s chief revenue officer Nada Stirratt. “We don’t care who owns us; we still have the biggest audience for this demo.”

In fact, the News Corp.-owned social entertainment site—which has seen its stock fall sharply as Facebook’s has risen over the past several years—is pressing ahead with a suite of innovative ad placements. The site has looked to reinvent itself starting with an entertainment-focused design last fall and is now going after brand dollars by rolling out a trio of impactive ad placements. It's also creating a more robust platform for brand pages.

“A lot of Web sites say they offer ‘roadblock’ ad opportunism, which really means two ads on one page,” said Stirratt. “We wanted to create a true site-wide roadblock.”

As a result, MySpace has started offering a new ad treatment, which allows brands to buy every ad a user sees on a MySpace page as they scroll down. That's four to six ads in total. The sequence of those ads can be changed based on an individual user’s response.

Additionally, MySpace has begun selling a push-down video ad, which expands to merge with two other ads on a page to form one large, nearly half-page ad unit that covers both the horizontal and vertical portions of a user’s screen.

Lastly, the site has introduced a pre-roll video treatment, which has e-commerce and social sharing functionality built in.

Besides ad placements, MySpace is overhauling its brand pages using a new patented technology platform called Foundry. According to Stirratt, MySpace took down nearly all of its brand communities and is in the process of replacing them with Foundry. Stirratt claims advertisers can put together a video-rich MySpace page in minutes—a process that in the past could have taken 30 hours.

MySpace recently tested the Foundry platform with HP, using video content that features music artist Antwan "Big Boi" Patton of Outkast. HP saw its collection of MySpace friends soar from 132 to 1.4 million.

Cable Nets Riled Up by Time Warner App Allows subs to stream video content to iPads

TV rights holders this week have unleashed their legal eagles, warning Time Warner Cable that its new distribution scheme is for the birds.

Network legal reps are issuing a flock of heated missives to the nation’s No. 2 cable operator, calling for an immediate halt to a new service that allows subscribers to stream video content to iPads and other tablet devices. Although Time Warner Cable introduced the free app just 24 hours, a number of cable network groups have already made it abundantly clear that they had not signed off on any such distribution arrangement.

While the initial barrage consisted of warning shots––programmers dispatched carefully worded reminders that such distribution pathways are not authorized by existing affiliate agreements, but stopped short of threatening immediate legal action––this is the latest salvo in the long and bloody war between rights holders and operators. A similar barrage was leveled at Comcast after the cable giant demoed its new Xfinity TV app on Jan. 5.

TWC is actually a bit late to the game, following on the heels of Comcast, Cablevision and DISH Network. The satellite-TV company introduced its iPad app on Dec. 1, 2010.

While TWC is concentrating on in-home tablet streaming––iPad users can only stream recorded content within spitting distance of their primary set-top box––content owners argue that the portable wrinkle is not explicitly sanctioned by existing carriage deals.

“Distribution via any sort of third-party app is not addressed in our carriage deals with Time Warner Cable or any other operator,” said one affiliate chief. “There is going to be a messy dissection of what the rights are but our position is that [this sort of distribution] is not authorized by our affiliate agreements.”

TWC CEO Glenn Britt has cautiously navigated the syntactic rapids, offering carefully worded assessments about the nature of the service. “Certainly all the business structures with the owners of copyrights are not fully in place, but you can begin to see a very exciting future for this set of industries and for the American consumer,” Britt said last August, after announcing plans to bow the iPad app. “There is great potential in all these devices ... But it’s also a complicated process.”

During a demo of the iPad app, TWC vp of web services Jason Gaedtke let slip that the operator may be looking to extend the range of app beyond the front porch. “We’re enabling the direct experience between the user and the content they love,” Gaedtke said in a conversation with Britt and TWC chief technology officer Mike LaJoie. “If you’re on the road, on a train perhaps, maybe you can stream to that device, start watching an episode or a news program.”

The TWC app allows subs the option to stream content from as many as 32 cable networks on their iPads. Among the more popular channels on the menu are A&E, Bravo, Comedy Central, Discovery Channel, E!, MTV, Nickelodeon and USA Network.

Although CNN is also on the roster, none of the Turner Broadcasting entertainment networks (TNT, TBS, truTV, Turner Classic Movies) are as yet available for streaming on the iPad. Earlier this year, Brain Roberts said Turner would be on board for his company’s iPad service. The Comcast CEO in January specifically mentioned that TNT’s The Closer will be available for viewing on iPads and Androids “hopefully very soon.”

That Turner seems to have sat out the first round of its former corporate sibling’s mobile streaming initiative is a bit curious, given how vocal Time Warner chairman and CEO Jeff Bewkes has been about the promise of “TV Everywhere.” Speaking to investors last autumn, Bewkes said advertisers were particularly enthused about agnostic media, as the spot loads in the C3 window remain consistent, no matter the platform.

Comcast and DISH Network have also been on the receiving end of written complaints from the networks, which argue that such streaming apps are not expressly covered by standing carriage agreements. In a December filing with the FCC, Discovery Communications said DISH Net was not granted permission to deliver its content via the tablet app. (On the other side of the table, it can be argued that tablet distribution within the home is covered by fair use.)

While no network affiliate/distribution execs would speak for attribution, a handful of programmers have acknowledged misgivings about the various tablet scenarios now in play. That said, one affiliate chief acknowledged that streaming to gizmos within a limited range of hearth and home may be “less of a threat” than the networks are letting on. “There’s the worry that you’re letting our content out the front door, and then there’s the reality that, right now anyway, none of the MSOs are going that far with it. So, yes: Our reaction is somewhat informed by our wanting to give ourselves a little more leverage down the road.”

If nothing else, the tablet fracas may only serve to make the negotiation of new carriage deals even more contentious a process than it already is. “If it’s not the portability issue, there’s the ad-insertion issue,” the exec said. “There are a lot of things to be wary of when someone starts moving your stuff around.”
