Party Like A Techie_Music Industry Analysis

FourSquare CEO_Dennis Crowley

One of my new Google+ friends (Chris Clayton) brought this article to my attention. Its written by none other than Bob Lefsetz. In the article he states that techies are the new rock stars and artists/musicians should follow their lead,
"Party like a rock star. We hear that all the time. That so and so is a rock star. You want to know who’s a rock star? The techies. The cofounders of Google have a veritable air force, and they’re not telling everybody about it. Rock stars used to function off the grid. Now the techies do and the musicians are positively mainstream.
The public has voted. The money is in tech. Because it’s the land of excitement, where innovators go to blow our minds. That used to be music’s domain. But music abdicated its position. If music is to count again it must take the above lessons very seriously, or else it will be doomed to be the second-class citizen it has become."

Here's another excerpt:

"3. Focus on the product first, not the money! Google, Foursquare, Twitter, Facebook, each and every tech startup began without a business plan. When you start playing music and immediately want to get paid you’re sending the wrong message. Make it about the product first, figure out how to make money second.
4. It’s all about the users. Sure, Facebook is constantly changing its privacy settings, but do you notice the backlash?
5. Marketing comes last, if at all. Google didn’t advertise until long after it became a household name.
6. Position yourself as cutting edge, as new. No tech startup gets a toehold unless it’s doing something new, why do you think you’re going to be a big success in music replicating what everybody else does?
7. Position yourself as a renegade. That’s part of the hoodie ethic in tech. In music everybody dresses up in finery and kisses the butt of anybody who might get them ahead, radio, the press, the guy at the label. These people should be afraid of you, they should not understand you, they should be your friend last.
8. Education/practice. Mark Zuckerberg went to Harvard, as did Bill Gates. Why do you think you can make it in music if you’ve got no talent and haven’t practiced? You don’t get into Harvard on a whim, you’ve got to perform for twelve years in advance, get great SATs, have incredible grades. Bill Gates was coding when he was still wet behind the ears. If you started playing yesterday and expect to be famous tomorrow, we’re laughing."

I think he makes some very relevant points. What do you think?

Slate Pro Audio Dragon - Dynamics Processor

The Slate Pro Audio Dragon is an extremely versatile, well built and great sounding compressor/ limiter.
Whether you work ITB, OTB or hybrid (combination of both) this compressor/limiter would be a great addition to your studio. Useful for both tracking and mixing. Link two for use on stereo groups/busses or master out of your favorite DAW.

From their website:

"The new SLATE PRO AUDIO DRAGON is unlike any dynamic audio processor you've heard before. Simply put, the DRAGON was created to be the most versatile compressor, limiter, and sound shaping tool that the pro audio industry has ever seen.

The Concept

The DRAGON starts with a classic FET compressor circuit, reminiscent of vintage units from the 60's and 70's. But the SLATE PRO AUDIO engineers enhanced the circuitry of the unit with a mastering grade signal path, including a CLASS A output section based around a custom-made transformer. The result is a compression quality that is rich and warm, but is also capable of sharp and aggressive tones. But this is only the start of what the DRAGON can do."

Here's an excerpt from an excellent SOS review:

"The Dragon is quite an unusual compressor because it offers so much in the way of additional tonal variation and saturation effects compared to most conventional units. With the Vintage, Sheen, Bite and Boom sound-mode switches, the Dragon can be set up with ease to provide anything from really quite crisp and sharp-sounding dynamic control on the one hand, right through to dark, warm and organic characters on the other — plus pretty much everything else in between.
The mode switches all live up to their names very well too. Boom does indeed fill out that bottom end (although you’ll need full-range monitors and a good room to really appreciate the magic going on in the bottom octave) and Vintage brings that harmonic complexity associated with transformers and valves. Sheen really does smooth out the top end in a classic vintage opto-comp way, while Bite introduces an edge that really helps the source cut through."

Audio demos of the Dragon can be found here.

GRIMM|Audio LS1 studio monitor

The GRIMM Audio LS1 is an unusual but visually appealing speaker monitor designed on the principles that "beauty and musicality are as much a part of recording as balance, sound staging and timing... such a speaker is not only comfortable to mix or master on but it translates like no other "
It seems it would be equally at home in a mastering suite, studio control room or high end home system.
"Despite their compact size, the floor standing speakers are clearly intended as main monitors in mastering studios and mixing rooms that have space to put free-standing speakers. The DSP controlled analog subwoofer output allows for perfect and easy integration with stereo subwoofers, for those that need high SPL performance below 40 Hz."
The LS1 comes complete with "the drive electronics, encompassing two 180W Class D power amplifiers, a 48/76-bit DSP, digital I/O, AD/DA and the same clock circuit as their CC1 master clock housed in one of the two legs"

The optional remote makes it very easy to setup and adjust the sound of the LS1:

"The LS1 can be remotely controlled via midi. Every set comes with a USB midi interface and a remote control converter box that facilitate connection of a Windows or Mac PC to the loudspeaker. Through that connection, the LS1 remote software controls all LS1 functions. This software also offers interfacing with any device that has access to a virtual midi bus in the PC, like DAW monitor controllers."

innerTUBE Audio's Dual Atomic SqueezeBox

The Dual Atomic Squeezebox from innerTUBE Audio is a stereo compressor/limiter capable of drastic gain reduction with minimal artifacts. It's equally at home on the stereo buss, drum buss, background vocals or individual sounds. It's a solidly built, high end unit with great sonics that has become an industry standard.

From their Press Release:
"Two Atomic Squeeze Box’s are combined in one convenient and compact package. They may be operated independently or switched to Stereo mode. The Atomic Squeeze Box is a full-band, dual-triode tube-based, analog signal amplitude processor. Its unique circuitry provides a wide range of automatic level control while imparting virtually none of the sonic artifacts that are usually associated with conventional compression and limiting. Even with steep ratios and low thresholds, the ASB remains incredibly transparent in operation. In the Stereo mode, the side chains are coupled and the setting of the longest release time adjustment sets the release time. Our innovative new (!) design virtually tracks the program envelope for its release function with the same accuracy and agility that it tracks for the attack function. Whether your need is taming an out-of-control vocalist, bass player, or just some very, very smooth level control; the Atomic Squeeze Box will open your eyes to a whole new horizon of smooth audio delights. The tube-based circuitry and custom nickel-core audio transformers impart a warmth and richness to the program that reminds us of the glorious sound of the finest analog audio. The distortion is very low, typically under 0.1%, even with 20 dB of gain reduction!"

Here's an excerpt from an '05 MixMagazine review:
"The Dual Atomic Squeeze Box put a heightened point on kick and snare drum tracks, which — when the processed results were combined with the dry source tracks — really made the drums rock. Amazingly, I could hear no pumping of the snare track's hi-hat bleed, even with up to 20 dB of gain reduction!
On quadruple-tracked background vocals, dialing in a very fast attack, very slow release and high slope slammed the tracks with more than 20 dB of gain reduction without thinning their tone — just what this arrangement needed for the background vocals to sit unobtrusively at ear-candy level in the subsequent mix.
Next up was electric guitar, blowing through a cabinet miked with a Royer R-122. Setting very fast attack and release times and sky-high slope for 8 dB of gain reduction on peaks, the sound was dynamite — warm, crunchy and in-your-face, but again, with no hint of pumping.
The unit also lent excellent dynamics control — characteristically not unlike that provided by an opto-compressor — to lead vocals. I heard some loss of depth with 6 dB of gain reduction, but no pumping.
The Dual Atomic Squeeze Box sounded really incredible on stereo room mics for drums. Dialing in 10 dB of gain reduction — using ultra-fast attack and release times and a high slope setting — produced absolutely slammin' tracks. But what amazed me was that there was only very mild pumping on crash cymbal hits. The unit's Link switch kept the stereo image rock-solid."
